We were delighted to welcome a local student from Somerset to Black Swan Dental Spa and Clinic for a week of work experience, which is where PDM’s Training HQ is uniquely located.
During their placement, Sumaya had the chance to see what life is really like in a busy private practice – shadowing our clinicians, learning how we care for patients, and seeing the latest techniques in action.
Sumaya also had the opportunity of first-hand insight on the front desk with the Reception team to welcome patients and learn about the patient journey.
They described their time with us as “inspiring”, giving them insight that goes beyond their university training. Sumaya also said they’ll be looking to Private Dental Mentor for guidance as they continue their journey to becoming a dentist.
For us, it was a pleasure to support the next generation and share what makes private practice special.
Practice principals – have you ever thought about the benefits of welcoming students into your clinic? It’s a fantastic way to inspire young professionals, share knowledge, and showcase the great work your team is doing.
1. Fresh energy and enthusiasm Students bring curiosity and eagerness to learn, which can be motivating for the whole team. Their questions often spark valuable discussions and reflections on everyday practice.
2. Team development Mentoring a student helps your staff build their own teaching and leadership skills. It can also strengthen teamwork as everyone contributes to supporting the student’s experience.
3. Showcasing your practice By hosting students, you position your practice as a place of excellence and innovation. This raises your profile locally and within the wider dental community.
4. Future recruitment pipeline Today’s work experience student could be tomorrow’s associate, hygienist, or team member. Giving them a positive first impression of your practice builds strong connections for the future.
5. Patient trust and engagement Patients often appreciate seeing a practice involved in training and mentoring the next generation—it demonstrates care for the profession and commitment to continuous improvement.
6. Personal satisfaction There’s a real reward in giving back to the profession, passing on knowledge, and helping to shape the future of dentistry.
Delegates of PDM undertook 3 days of intensive training with morphology master and world-renowned dental technician János Makó to achieve a deep understanding of the anterior anatomy; a crucial step to restorations.
In the world of private dentistry, success isn’t just about technical skills or the latest equipment – it’s about people. Whether you’re an associate dentist building your confidence or a practice principal striving to elevate your team, mentorship can be the catalyst for growth, excellence, and long-term success.
Congratulations to PDM’s six new delegates who joined the institute on Young Dentist Day 2025 hosted by the BACD.
