From Clinical Ability to Clinical Confidence: Merve’s Evolve Journey

Discover Merve’s Story with Private Dental Mentor ↓

Halfway through the Evolve Dental Programme, we caught up with Merve Tevetoğlu to reflect on her journey so far. From strengthening patient communication and recognising her own clinical ability to finding inspiration in a supportive community of dentists and educators, Merve shares how Evolve is helping shape the next stage of her career in private dentistry.

Why Evolve?

When Merve joined the Evolve Dental Programme, she was already an experienced clinician providing private dental treatment. Her ambition wasn’t simply to learn how to perform more procedures.

She wanted to become more confident in herself as a clinician, strengthen the way she communicated with patients and continue developing within private dentistry.

There was another important part of the decision too: community.

“I hoped to meet other dentists, learn from experienced mentors, and build a network of like-minded colleagues.”

That combination of clinical development, mentorship and connection has become an important part of Merve’s Evolve experience.

Recognising How Far You’ve Already Come

One of Merve’s biggest breakthroughs wasn’t learning a particular clinical technique. It was recognising something that can be surprisingly difficult to see when you’re immersed in dentistry every day: how much she had already achieved.

Working alongside other dentists and learning from different educators gave her an opportunity to look at her own development from a different perspective.

“When you do the same job every day, you don’t always notice how much you’ve grown.”

Meeting other clinicians also highlighted how many of the challenges dentists experience are shared.

Rather than comparing herself with those around her, Merve began to appreciate her existing skills and recognise the progress she had already made throughout her career.

When asked to describe Evolve in three words, her answer was simple:

Supportive. Inspiring. Empowering.

A Different Kind of Clinical Development

For Merve, one of the most significant changes since joining Evolve has happened in the conversations surrounding the dentistry.

She now spends more time understanding what matters to her patients, explaining their treatment options clearly and involving them in decisions about their care.

Exposure to different educators has also shown her that excellent dentistry doesn’t necessarily mean following one rigid approach.

“Watching different educators approach similar situations in different ways has taught me that there is always something new to learn.”

And although Merve was already undertaking many of the treatments covered within the programme, Evolve has given her greater confidence in the way she discusses those treatments and guides patients through their decisions.

It’s an important distinction.

Progress doesn’t always mean performing a procedure you’ve never attempted before. Sometimes it’s about becoming more assured, considered and confident in the dentistry you’re already capable of delivering.

From Communication to Patient Confidence

That development can be seen in one of Merve’s recent patient cases.

The patient had been seeing Merve for some time but had never felt happy with her smile. Existing porcelain/acrylic veneers were ageing and affected by recurrent decay, but the patient did not want to pursue a significantly more expensive treatment option.

After discussing the available choices together, Merve proposed replacing the existing restorations with direct composite bonding.

Treatment began across the upper anterior teeth, from canine to canine. The old restorations were carefully removed, the recurrent decay managed and the teeth restored to create a more natural, aesthetic smile.

The clinical result was important. But what happened afterwards meant even more to Merve.

The patient was delighted with her new smile and told Merve that she finally felt confident smiling again. At her review appointment, she subsequently asked Merve to treat her lower teeth too.

For Merve, that decision represented something beyond the dentistry.

“That meant a lot to me because it showed the trust she had built in me and my work.”

More Than a Clinical Result

As an overseas dentist who has been practising in the UK for almost three years, Merve describes one of her biggest challenges as understanding a different culture, how patients communicate and what they expect from their dentist.

This case therefore represented much more than a successful restorative outcome.

“What I’m most proud of isn’t just the clinical result – it’s seeing how much the treatment improved the patient’s confidence. Seeing someone smile again because of your work is one of the most rewarding parts of dentistry.”

For Merve, it was also an opportunity to recognise her own progression – not only clinically, but in her ability to establish trust and build strong relationships with her patients.

The Biggest Evolve Breakthrough So Far

When asked which part of her Evolve journey has had the greatest impact, Merve highlighted Level-Up with Dr Ahmad Nounu and Laura Horton.

The restorative education throughout Evolve had already been valuable, but Level-Up gave Merve a different kind of confidence boost.

She realised that many of the treatment protocols she already used in practice were also being taught by highly respected clinicians.

Rather than simply giving her another protocol to follow, it validated the clinician she had already become.

“That gave me a huge confidence boost and made me appreciate how far I’ve come as a clinician.”

Merve particularly valued the different perspectives Ahmad and Laura brought to the programme, combining clinical knowledge with communication, confidence and personal development.

“Their experience, honesty and encouragement really resonated with me, and I left the course feeling more motivated and confident in myself.”

The People Behind the Programme

Clinical education is only one part of Evolve.

For Merve, learning alongside other dentists has been one of the programme’s greatest benefits.

Sharing experiences has helped her recognise that uncertainty and professional challenges aren’t unique to any one clinician. Having a group of people experiencing similar situations has created a valuable source of reassurance, motivation and support.

The relationship with the PDM team has been equally important.

“They are friendly, approachable, organised and genuinely invested in every delegate’s success. Throughout the programme, I have always felt supported, encouraged and never alone.”

And yes, we’ll happily keep her additional comment:

“Especially Lucy :)”

Looking Ahead to the Second Half of Evolve

Merve is now looking forward to building on the progress she’s already made.

During the second half of Evolve, she wants to continue developing her treatment planning, aesthetic dentistry and patient communication, while learning from the different perspectives of the programme’s remaining educators.

By the end of the programme, her ambition is to feel even more confident delivering high-quality private dentistry, develop excellent relationships with her patients and approach more advanced aesthetic and restorative cases with confidence.

More broadly, Evolve has reinforced the direction she wants her career to take.

“It has reinforced my passion for private dentistry and encouraged me to continue developing both clinically and personally.”

Before Evolve, I Was… Now I Am…

Perhaps the simplest way to describe Merve’s journey so far is in her own words:

“Before Evolve, I was constantly trying to improve. Now I am more confident in my abilities, my communication, and the value I bring to my patients.”

And when asked how likely she would be to recommend Evolve to another dentist?

10/10.

“I would absolutely recommend it. The clinical education is excellent, but for me the biggest benefit has been the people.”

For Merve, Evolve hasn’t been about becoming an entirely different dentist.

It’s been about recognising the clinician she already is, developing the skills around that foundation and gaining the confidence to trust her abilities.

And she’s only halfway through.
